Yesterday I posted about pre-drive checks you should carry out to maintain a safe car, today is about furthering that with servicing.
All cars have a recommended servicing schedule intended to keep the car in top condition. A lot of people put off services as they don’t think they are necessary or feel they are too costly. This can lead to problems down the road from reduced MPG to complete engine failure. A properly maintained and serviced car can run for an astonishing amount of miles. For example take Irv Gordon’s 1966 Volvo 1800S, Irv has travelled almost 3,000,000 (3 Million!) miles in this one car! That is an average of around 64,000 miles per year and the secret? Maintenance and servicing!
Irv’s mechanic said “Because Irv follows the owner’s manual and truly cares for and loves his car, I have no doubt he’ll reach three million. Irv always says he takes better care of the car than himself!”
Volvo were so impressed with Irvs story they have turned into an advertising campaign, they created a commercial from footage of his travels and interviews with him. He embodies the freedom you gain by learning to drive, the ability to go anywhere, whenever you feel like it. The stories he has gained over the course of 3,000,000 miles driving would be hard to find on a bus or train! Irv even holds a Guinness World Record for Most Miles by Original Owner!
